who we are and what we do
clothfabric is a small independent design company based in Sydney, established in 1995 by designer Julie Paterson. We produce upholstery and furnishing fabrics for the home and boutique commercial interiors. With colours and shapes developed from drawings in Julie’s sketchbooks of neighbourhood landscapes, we focus on making natural, hand made fabrics and products with an earthy, relaxed Australian feel.
where we do it and what we use
We design our fabrics in Sydney and we employ craftspeople in rural NSW and Victoria to make them. We print most of our designs onto natural basecloths, mostly onto industrial hemp. We use linen, organic cotton and jute too, but hemp is the real fabric of choice due to its durability, thermal qualities and low water requirements to name just a few reasons.
We make only what we need. Our dyer dyes by the roll, our printer screenprints on 25 metre tables and our makers make one thing at a time, in their own time, all by hand. We have worked with these people for the past 14 years and are proud to have developed strong working relationships together.
The inks and dyes we use are water based and non toxic and the minimal manufacturing waste that is produced is disposed of responsibly.
We’ve always made locally, by hand because it means we can work in short batches, keep a close eye on the quality and have a controlled and sensitive approach to materials and manufacture. And by working with low tech, old school processes, our fabrics have a character and personality all their own that cannot be created by any fancy machines.
what else we do
As well as our fabric collections, homewares, rugs, accessories and artworks, we particularly enjoy working collaboratively on bespoke projects with others. Whether the job is furnishing international boutique hotels or recolouring an existing design to a client’s own colour palette, we love the interaction and the processes involved in getting our fabrics out into the world.
